PG&E Summer Jobs Program

The PG&E Summer Jobs Program Orientation was held on April 6th at the Raley Teen Center and over 150 teens were inattendance to learn more about this wonderful program! Teens participated in The Game of Life, a financial literacy game roughly based off the beloved board game which required students to create an imaginary monthly budget. Teens rotated from various stations, such as Housing, Food and Technology and made selections about how much money they were willing to spend on their monthly bills. If students completed the game under budget, they were entered into a raffle to will giftcards or an IPad. Teens also had the opportunity to win extra raffle tickets through dinnertime trivia and Game Room Challenges. Next UP: Career Launch, the five week pre-employment training class which will prepare teens to interview for one of 55 paid summer positions!

Comstock's Highlights our PG&E Summer Interns

(July 28, 2016) The first time Margarita Armijo applied for a job, the 16-year-old took one look at the application requirements and said to herself, “What’s a resume?”

But landing her current summer internship went much smoother, thanks to the PG&E Summer Jobs Program, now in its fourth year at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Sacramento.

“If you’re given that hand of help, you should take it,” says Armijo, a junior at Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento. She is one of two interns assigned to work at a children’s summer camp held at Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services.

For Armijo, the oldest of 12 children, “It’s just in my nature to help out with kids.” (Read more on Comstock's)

Professional Development Days

(July 15, 2016) Every Friday our interns in our PGE Summer Jobs program have professional development days. A few Fridays ago, they all received CPR and First Aid Training from Professional CPR. We're happy to provide our summer interns with additional skills that they can add to their resumes!

Thank You AT&T Volunteers

(May 25, 2016) Thank you to AT&T for providing volunteers for the PG&E Summer Jobs Program on Interview Day. Preparing our Sacramento youth for jobs is making Great Futures start now!

PG&E Summer Jobs Interview Day

(May 24, 2016) Phase One of our PG&E Summer Jobs Program recently ended with an Interview Day. High-profile representatives from several local businesses gave 110 students the opportunity to practice their newly-learned interview skills. We wish our candidates the best of luck as they continue their journey in this program and making Great Futures happen.

4th Annual PG&E Summer Jobs Program 2016
In Full Swing

(May 10, 2016) Phase One of our PG&E Summer Jobs Program is in full swing with Career Launch classes. Here is a recent snapshot of our prospective interns from our cohort of classes at Teichert Branch. In Career Launch the teens are learning how to interview, how to write a cover letter and resume, appropriate job dress and communication, and problem solving skills! This is the fourth year of the program, sponsored by Pacific Gas & Electric.

4th Annual PG&E Summer Jobs Program 2016

THANK YOU to Pacific Gas and Electric Company for continuing to sponsor our popular Summer Youth Jobs Program for the 4th summer in a row! If you are between the ages of 15-18, a high school student, and have no work experience, we encourage you to apply to the program.

The Basics: 200 teens will be selected for “Phase 1” of the program and complete six weeks of our “Career Launch” curriculum this spring where they will be taught how to write a resume and cover letter, how to interview, how to manage finances, how to deal with grievances in the work place, and how to be a stellar employee. All of the teens who complete Career Launch will have the opportunity to interview for one of our 55 PAID Summer Internships.

In “Phase 2” the 55 teens who were selected for internships will work for six weeks at minimum wage (now $10 per hour), 25 hours per week, Monday-Friday. The interns work at our partner worksites, which have included businesses such as: Staples, Old Navy, Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 24 Hour Fitness, City of Sacramento Police Department, City Council, Congresswoman Doris Matsui’s office, and the Boys & Girls Club summer camp. Interns are at their worksites Monday-Thursday, and on Fridays all interns report to our Raley Teen Center for (paid) Professional Development Days. Development Days include things like CPR/First Aid Training, Event Planning experience, and public speaking training.

PG&E Summer Jobs Program 2015 was a HUGE Success!

Our 55 hardworking and impressive interns concluded their employment on July 31st after 6 weeks of working at one of 23 different businesses and organizations across Sacramento. Interns helped out with daily activities in law offices, retail locations, non-profits, hospitals and of course-- the Boys & Girls Clubs summer camps! Interns learned valuable skills such as customer service, successfully navagating professional environments, administrative support and team work. Our job site supervisors had so many kind and encouraging words for their interns and truly appreciated the daily assistance!

Besides working at their job sites, interns also met each Friday at the Raley Teen Center to learn leadership skills through a variety of speakers and activities, got CPR and First Aid certified and even planned and executed a family friendly carnival for the Teichert Branch summer camp!

On Friday, August 7th our interns and their families attended PG&E Summer Job Program Graduation at the Raley Teen Center. Police Chief Sam Sommers and Counselmember Steve Hansen spoke along with Deirdre Fitzpatrick of Channel 3 News as the event's emcee. Our very own Josnique Evans and Amir Ansari shared their lessons learned from the internship and all interns received a big suprise-- Ipad minis to help them in their future employment and academic endeavors!
